Google Ads or Meta Ads: which should you use?

Both can bring you customers. They just work in different ways. Here is a simple way to choose, and why many Dubai businesses end up using both.

In short

Choose Google Ads first if people already search for your service and you need ready-to-buy leads quickly. Choose Meta Ads first if your product looks good on camera, is new, or few people search for it yet. Many Dubai businesses use both: Meta builds interest and Google captures people ready to buy.

How does Google Ads work?

Google Ads shows your ad when someone searches for what you sell, like “dentist in JLT” or “villa for sale in Dubai Hills”.

These people already want something. That is why search ads often bring ready-to-buy leads.

You choose keywords, write ads and set a budget. You pay when someone clicks. Google also runs ads on YouTube, Google Maps, Gmail and partner websites, but for most local businesses search is where to start.

Google Maps ads matter a lot in Dubai. Many people search “near me” on their phone before visiting a clinic, salon, car service centre or restaurant. A well-kept Google Business Profile linked to your ads account helps you show there.

How does Meta Ads work?

Meta Ads show on Facebook and Instagram while people scroll. They are not searching, so you catch their eye with great images, video and a clear offer.

Meta is strong for creating demand, launching new products and reaching people by interest, age and area.

In the UAE, Instagram is usually the bigger of the two for consumer brands. Facebook still reaches some older and expat audiences well. Ads can also run on WhatsApp through click-to-WhatsApp ads, which open a chat with your business instead of a form. For many Dubai buyers that feels more natural than filling in fields.

Meta’s lead forms are quick to fill in, which can bring lots of leads. The trade-off is that some will be less serious. That makes fast follow-up even more important.

What about TikTok and Snapchat?

They are worth knowing about. Snapchat has strong use among younger Emirati and Gulf audiences. TikTok reaches a wide mix of ages across the region and suits short, lively video.

For most businesses they are a second or third step, not a first. Start with Google or Meta, prove the numbers, then test TikTok or Snapchat if your audience is there. Both need content made for the platform, filmed vertically and in a natural style, so plan for that before you spend. Our social media team can advise on which fits your brand.

Choose Google Ads first if…

People already search for your service. You need leads quickly. Your buyers are in a hurry, like emergency repairs, clinics or legal help.

Good examples: a dental clinic in Al Barsha, an AC repair company, a business setup consultant, a law firm, a driving school or a car rental firm. In each case, the buyer knows what they need and goes to Google to find someone.

Google is also good when the buyer compares carefully. B2B services, education and healthcare often fit here.

Choose Meta Ads first if…

Your product looks great on camera. You are launching something new. Few people search for it yet. Or you sell lifestyle, fashion, food, events or property launches.

Good examples: a new restaurant opening in Dubai Marina, a fashion or abaya brand, a fitness studio, a beauty clinic with strong before-and-after content, or an off-plan property launch.

Meta also suits brands that need to be seen many times before someone buys. A good video can introduce your brand to thousands of the right people in your chosen areas.

What drives the cost of each?

On Google, cost is driven by how many businesses bid on the same keywords and how good your ads and landing pages are. Competitive sectors in Dubai, like property, legal and healthcare, tend to cost more per click.

On Meta, cost is driven by how many advertisers want the same audience, the time of year and how well your creative performs. Busy seasons, like Ramadan, Eid, Dubai Shopping Festival and the end of the year, often bring more competition.

On both, poor ads and weak landing pages make each lead more expensive. Good creative and a clear offer bring the cost down. So does strong follow-up, because you turn more of the leads you paid for into customers.

Should you run ads in English, Arabic or both?

Dubai is a mixed market. Many buyers prefer English. Others, especially Emirati and wider Arab audiences, respond better to Arabic. Both platforms let you target by language.

If your buyers include Arabic speakers, test Arabic ads with an Arabic landing page. Write them fresh in Arabic, do not just translate the English ad word for word. Tone and wording matter.

Why the best results often come from both

Meta builds interest. Google catches people when they are ready to buy. Retargeting on both reminds people who visited but did not enquire.

Start with the channel that fits best, prove it works, then add the other.

A typical path looks like this. A buyer sees your Instagram video. A week later they search your brand name on Google and click your ad. They look around, leave, then see a reminder ad on Instagram and send a WhatsApp message. Both channels played a part.

Make sure your tracking can see this. Set up conversion tracking on both platforms and record where each lead came from in your CRM. Otherwise, each platform takes credit for the same sale and you cannot tell what really works.

How do you run a first test?

Pick one channel and one clear goal, such as booked appointments, viewings or table bookings. Decide what a good lead looks like before you start, so you can judge results fairly.

On Google, start with a small set of tightly matched keywords around your main service and area. Add negative keywords to block searches that are not a fit, such as job seekers or people looking for free options. Send clicks to a page built for that service, not your home page.

On Meta, start with a few creative ideas rather than one. Try a short video, a simple image and a carousel, each with a clear offer. Target the areas of Dubai and the wider UAE you can serve, and let the platform find the people most likely to respond.

Run the test long enough to learn something. Check results weekly, not daily. Turn off what clearly does not work and give more budget to what does. Then, once one channel brings steady results, add the second.

What mistakes waste ad budget?

Sending every click to the home page is one. Buyers want to land on a page about the exact thing they clicked on. Another is running ads in areas you cannot serve, or at hours when nobody can answer the phone.

On Google, broad keywords without negatives can bring lots of clicks from people who will never buy. On Meta, using the same tired image for months makes results fade as people stop noticing it.

Judging success by clicks or likes is a common trap too. What matters is qualified leads and sales. Track these in your CRM and compare channels on cost per customer, not cost per click.

Finally, changing everything every few days makes it hard for either platform to learn. Make one change at a time and give it a fair chance.

Whatever you choose, fix the follow-up

Ads only bring the lead. A fast reply, a clear landing page and simple follow-up turn it into a customer. Without these, any ad budget is wasted.

Your landing page should load fast on mobile, show a clear offer and make contact easy, with a WhatsApp button as well as a form. Every lead should get a quick reply, ideally within minutes. Our guide to speed to lead explains how.

Common questions

Which is cheaper in Dubai, Google Ads or Meta Ads?

It depends on your sector, audience, season and how good your ads are. Compare cost per qualified lead or per sale, not cost per click.

Can I run both on a small budget?

You can, but it is usually better to start with one channel, prove it works, then add the other. Splitting a small budget too thin makes it hard to learn anything.

Are click-to-WhatsApp ads worth trying?

For many UAE businesses, yes. Buyers are used to chatting on WhatsApp, and the ad opens a conversation straight away instead of a form.

Should my ads be in Arabic?

If your buyers include Arabic speakers, test Arabic ads with an Arabic landing page. Write the copy fresh rather than translating it word for word.

How long before I know if ads are working?

Give a new campaign a few weeks to gather data and settle. Track leads and sales in your CRM, not just clicks, so you judge it on real results.
